Addis Ababa, 13 August 2012: The Commission of the African Union (AU) has learnt with shock of the attack carried out, on 12 August 2012, against members of the Bangladeshi Formed Police Unit (FPU) in the AU-UN Hybrid Operations in Darfur (UNAMID), stationed at the OTASH IDP Camp Community Policing Centre, close to Nyala, in South Darfur (Sudan). This attack resulted in the killing of one member of the FPU, while another one was seriously injured.

The Commission strongly condemns this unprovoked and cowardly attack.  It extends AU’s deepest condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Commission stresses the need to spare no efforts in order to identify the perpetrators of this criminal act and bring them to justice.
