Addis Ababa, 13 March 2012: The Commission of the African Union (AU) has decided to dispatch an Election Observer Mission to Guinea Bissau in the context of the early presidential election to be held in that country on 18 March 2012. Led by Mr. Leonardo Simao, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mozambique, and comprising 40 members, the Mission started its deployment in March 2012. The Mission will conclude one week after the
election.

Furthermore, the Commission has decided to provide financial assistance to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Guinea Bissau to support its activities related to the organisation of the election on 18 March 2012.
