The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), at its 821st meeting, held on 9 January 2019, strongly condemned the attempted coup d’état led by a group of soldiers during the night of 6 to 7 January 2019, in Gabon.
Council reaffirmed the total rejection by the AU of any Unconstitutional change of Government, in conformity with the Lomé Declaration of July 2000, the Constitutive Act and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
Council congratulated the Government of Gabon and all the institutions of the country for the efforts that made it possible to thwart this attempted act of destabilisation.
Council recalled the imperative need for all the Gabonese stakeholders to scrupulously respect the provisions of the Gabonese Constitution and to exercise utmost restraint in order to take up the challenges facing the deepening of democracy in their country.
