INVITATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

What: The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, African Union Commission (AUC) is organising Member States Validation Meeting on the Teachers’ Guides and Learners’ Manuals needed for the AU Strategy for the inclusion and Mainstreaming of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) in School Curricula.

When:  4th- 6th December 2023

Where: Maputo, Mozambique

Background: The AU strategy for the inclusion and the mainstreaming of the ACDEG in school curricula of AU Member States and its implementation materials, including the strategic roadmap and the training material tool, were all considered by the representatives of RECs and RMs from August 12-14, 2022, in Abidjan. A consultative meeting was then convened in Kinshasa, DRC, on the 29th of November 2022 to discuss the documents that needed to be developed for the launching of the pilot phase of the project. A committee of experts was put in place and tasked with the development of the indicated materials. The first meeting for the development of the material took place in Bujumbura, Burundi, from March 20-25, 2023 during which five (05) teachers’ guides were developed for the nursery, primary and secondary levels. The second meeting of the experts group took place in Dakar, Senegal, from May 2-7, 2023 and served to produce the learners’ manuals – three (03) in total – for the primary and secondary levels.

Purpose: This meeting will bring together the Member States’ representatives, experts, RECs, RMs and AU organs to reflect on the different documents produced for this project, validate them, and advise on the way forward. More specifically, the meeting seeks to set the stage for the effective implementation of the pilot phase of the project in selected countries due to take place in 2024.

Expected Outcomes: Validated guides for the teachers and manuals for the learners for each key stage.
