The African Union Commission (AUC) announces the arrival on 22 June 2024 of its Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM) deployed to observe the first round of the presidential election scheduled to take place on 29 June 2024 in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Following the decision of the Chairperson of the AUC, His Excellency (H.E) Mr. Moussa (SEM.) FAKI MAHAMAT and on the proposal of the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (CAPPS) of the African Union (AU), H.E Ambassador Bankole ADEOYE, the AUEOM is led by H.E. Domitien NDAYIZEYE, former President of the Republic of Burundi and Member of the AU Panel of the Wise.

The AUEOM is comprised of 27 short-term observers (STO) including: Ambassadors to the African Union in Addis Ababa (PRC), members of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), members of election management bodies (EMB), African civil society organizations (CSOs) and electoral academic experts. They come from the following 16 States: Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Nigeria, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia and Zimbabwe.

In accordance with its mandate and faithful to international, continental, regional standards and instruments, and the national legal framework governing democratic elections, the AUEOM will carry out independent, objective, impartial and credible electoral observation accompanied by relevant recommendations. It will meet stakeholders in the electoral process, other international Missions and Partners. It will make his Preliminary Statement after the vote, followed by a more detailed Final Report.
